PRE-CAS INTERVIEW GUIDE

PRE-CAS INTERVIEW GUIDE

A GUIDE ON WHAT TO EXPECT AND HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR PRE-CAS INTERVIEW

"WHY AM I HAVING AN INTERVIEW?"

  • UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) conduct credibility interviews for Tier 4 (General) student applicants before granting them immigration permission to study in the UK.
  • The purpose of the interview is to ascertain that your intention to study in the UK is genuine.
  • The interview will be conducted in English, and therefore your English language ability will also be assessed.
  • The interview will normally take place after you have enrolled your bio-metrics. It is generally undertaken through a video link and is approximately 10-15 mins long.
  • UKVI will send a summary of your interview along with your documents to an Entry Clearance Officer who will take your answers in to account when making a decision on your Tier 4 application. They may also want to undertake a second, more detailed, interview if they require further clarification. Please double check contact details you provided are correct, and check your email and phone regularly.
  • The questions will focus on your reasons for coming to the UK, and will include questions about your background, your study plans, careers plans and finances.

"WHAT KIND OF QUESTIONS WILL I GET ASKED?"

During the interview process you may be asked the following questions:

Why do you want to study in the UK?

  • Explain what attracted you to the UK rather than your home country and the course you have chosen at this University.
  • What makes it better than similar courses in your home country, or other English speaking countries such as Canada, the USA or Australia?

Why did you choose this University rather than another University?

  • Explain what you know about this University and its teaching resources, academic proficiency, facilities, location, accommodation and distinctive features.
  • Students choose their university for a range of reasons, from academic quality to the location of the campus, to positive experiences of family or friends. If ranking is one of the reasons, you must provide the source of the ranking.
  • Explain what factors were important to you and talk about any research you did before you applied and any other Universities you thought about applying to and why you choose this University instead.
Why did you choose your course and how long your course is?

  • Explain your decision making process on what attracted you to this specific course.
  • Also discuss the modules and their contents, key assessment methods, the structure of the course, learning outcomes and progression routes.

How do your studies fit in to your future career plans?

  • Explain what your plans are after you graduate – What skills and knowledge will your course at this university provide for your future career?
  • How will the knowledge and skills you gain from this course help you with the type of work you hope to do?
  • What research have you done about the job market, including job titles, job requirements and expected.

If the costs of pursuing your course of study are higher in the UK than in your home country, why have you decided to incur the extra costs involved with studying in the UK?

  • Think about the advantages that a degree from the UK might give you and why you and/or your family are prepared to make this investment.
  • Have you made a realistic assessment of all the costs involved and how you plan to pay for them? These costs include the course fees and living costs, including accommodation.

Do you plan to work in the UK?

  • In most cases, you will not be allowed to fill a permanent full time vacancy as a Tier 4 student. You cannot rely on funds from working to pay your course fees and living costs so you must be aware of this. You also need to demonstrate an understanding of the hours you are allowed to work.
  • The main purpose for being in the UK is your studies so, if you are hoping to work, think about how this would enhance your academic studies.

How do you explain the gaps in your education/employment history – what were you doing during this time?

  • Explain what you were doing during this time and skills you have gained that will help you in your studies and long term career plans.

What is your current occupation?

  • This is an opportunity to discuss how your work experience will help you in your studies, or how your course will help you develop your future career.

TOP TIPS :-

  • Give precise and detailed answers to explain yourself fully and accurately.
  • Avoid using generic answers and demonstrate you have done sufficient research.
  • The answers must be supported with facts and figures.
  • The interviewer is not trying to catch you out so be as natural as you can.
  • The interview can be a daunting process but try to answer all questions honestly and clearly.
  • If there are any technical issues please report them before leaving the interview.
  • Ensure all answers are conducted in English. If you do not understand a question please do ask them to repeat it.
Good luck...!
